Five spice powder is a mixture believed to be based on the ancient chinese philosophy of achieving a proper yin-yang balance of flavours; sweet, bitter, salty, sour, and spicy. Five spice is therefore an essential seasoning agent in Chinese cooking. Traditionally added to stews, casseroles, steamed and braised food, a flavouring for sauces and gravies, it is also used as a marinade for barbeques and many other dishes, including roast duck, roast pork, spare ribs and smoked fish.
